Armenian archives supposedly open

Turkish Daily News

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s Dashnak archives in Boston, United States, which Turkish Historical Society President Professor Yusuf Halaçoğlu had recently offered $20 million to open and catalogue, are already open, a newspaper revealed yesterday.

The head of archives, Tatul Sonentz-Papazian, confirmed in an interview with a New-York based Armenian reporter that the cataloguing and microfilm processes had been completed in 1995 and that the archives have been open to all researchers since then, daily Hürriyet reported.

Papazian said he met with historian Hilmar Kaiser, to whom Halaçoğlu claimed he had relayed his initial offer of support a month ago, but had never heard of the $20 million offer. The Armenian reporter also consulted historian Ara Sarafian, who likewise claimed he had never heard of the offer, and said it was just an attempt at publicity.

When Hürriyet contacted Halaçoğlu about these allegations, the professor said, “If the archives are in fact open as they claim, then we will apply for access tomorrow. And we will make public their response to our offer.”
